Every year, AMC offers 4-H Club members the opportunity to learn about careers in veterinary medicine. AMC's 5-night Advanced Veterinary Careers, Animal Care and Handling seminar takes place in March and April.

At AMC, we believe it's important to help teach local youth about animal care, health and welfare. We are proud to be regular participants in 4-H functions sponsored by our local 4-H Club. Here are a few of the functions in which AMC's veterinarians and patient care team have participated:

Introductory Veterinary Careers, Animal Care and Animal Handling Seminar:
The introductory Veterinary Careers, Animal Care and Animal Handling seminars were developed by the Animal Medical Center team to give kids under 18 years of age a little taste of what it is like to have a career in veterinary medicine. During the introductory, one day, seminar, we introduce participants to careers in small animal veterinary medicine including becoming a veterinarian, certified veterinary technician or a veterinary assistant. We also discuss small animal care and handling for dogs, cats and exotic pets with live demonstrations. Introductory seminars are held throughout the year.

Advanced Veterinary Careers, Animal Care and Animal Handling Seminars:
The advanced Veterinary Careers, Animal Care and Animal Handling seminars were developed by the Animal Medical Center team to give kids under 18 years of age a more detailed idea of what a career in veterinary medicine entails. Our advanced seminar is a 5 night seminar held in the early spring. The classes include discussions and live animal demonstrations. The 5 class nights are:

•  Veterinary Careers - In depth descriptions and examples of careers in veterinary medicine

•  Physical Exams and Handling - Methods for safely handling hospital patients and demonstrations and discussions about proper pet care and pet wellness exams

•  Radiology and Laboratory - Animal x-ray techniques, laboratory techniques, patient diagnoses and patient treatment

•  Exotic Pets - All about exotic pet care, diagnosis, treatment and surgery

•  Surgery - participants are invited to watch a live surgery and to ask questions of the surgery doctor and technicians
